LD 2174: Intends to make local ordinances null and void.

And, possibly, the legislation is unconstitutional.

LD 2174 is proposed legislation in the Environment and Natural Resources Committee. It aims to void local ordinances regulating solar, wind, transmission, and energy storages.

Many of those ordinances were written by volunteers, so it is aiming to undo thousands (or tens of thousands) of hours of volunteer efforts. We have heard from an industry insider who estimates that over 60% of towns in Maine have solar ordinances.

These ordinances regulate location as well as safety issues: most tiny towns have limited fire-fighting technology, and need these ordinances to regulate the installation of industrial scale energy infrastructure safely.

If you can provide testimony in person, that is BEST. Feb 25, 2026, Cross Building, Augusta Room 216. 1pm. Expect to stay there for hours—it’s always an unknown timeline.

If not able to go in person, write and submit testimony:
