Transmission Line Updates
No new news in Maine. Check out a group in Maryland dealing with the same sort problem.
We are still waiting for updates on the next phase of the Northern Maine Renewable Energy Transmission line. It is tracked in Maine Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) Docket 2024-00099. Unfortunately, this docket was deemed confidential by the MPUC - so very little interesting information is available to the public.
This confidentiality is in contradistinction to the RFI for round one of this procurement (2021-00223) - where you can go read many fascinating things if so inclined.
On other news, I’ve been following the activism of an incredibly well organized group in Maryland called Stop MPRP. They are facing a 70 mile long, 500kV transmission line which “will disrupt and destroy private land, farms, homes, and the natural environment.” (sound familiar?)
In the Maryland case, they understand the electric power will be largely used to support data centers (think about that every time you interface with chatGPT or make an AI generated image.)
